In the summer of 2005 a small group of friends began talks of simply moving baskets to alternate pin placements around on their Home Disc Golf course. This course was Sanders Ferry Park located in Hendersonville, TN. Over the next several months, as these friends began to move baskets, the thought of adding different pin locations started getting discussed. This lead for the need to work hand in hand with the local Hendersonville Parks Dept. In order to become organized and have an official face to work with the local parks dept, these friends decided to form a club. In the summer of 2006 the Hendersonville Disc Golf Club (HDGC) was created.
The HDGC started out the 2006 - 2007 year with 27 members and with big ideas of what they wanted to accomplish. Several of these accomplishments included the addition several new pin placements, the rotation of baskets on a fairly routine basis, the clean up, maintenance, and improvement of course layout and natural vegetation. In 2006 the HDGC started Monday Random Draw Doubles and Club Bag Tag tournaments. This proved to be a big success and slowly started to not only grow the ability of the local players, but attract new Disc Golfers from surrounding areas. For the 2007 - 2008 year, the membership jump to 32. As the club has grown, so did the amount of members from neighboring town Gallatin. This lead to the a vote to change the name of the Club at the 2008 end of year Club Championship. The name change was suggested based on the County in which Hendersonville and Gallatin are located.
At the start of the 2008 - 2009 season the newly named Sumner County Disc Golf Association (SCDGA) started off with a bang. In addition to the name change, we also almost doubled our membership, growing to an astonishing 57 members. We have seen many changes with the biggest being the opening of the Cloud 9 Disc Golf Store by 2 of our members Bobby Brodie and Tommy Slaton. This is the first Disc Golf store to be opened in the Nashville Area in over 20 years. With the addition of this store, Cloud 9 extended the benefit of locally obtainable plastic as well as a discount for being a club member.
What can be expected for the 2010 season? Well for starters, The SumnerCountyDGA.com webname was purchased. With the purchasing of this site, the SCDGA will now be able to host a plethora of information related to Disc Golf including club events, photos, and video. The SCDGA will also be changing the start of the Disc Golf season to coincide more readily with the calendar year. What else can be expected? SCDGA gear? Leagues? Club Sponsored Events? My suggestion is to check back often and find out.
